Recently, I have seen an increase of cases in the clinic classified as a vestibular disorder, and more specifically; Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV). OK, I know big words right?
What does this mean and how does one seek relief?
Vertigo can be as simple as feeling unsteady or off balance but can also present like a feeling of the room or your head spinning. This leads to nausea and vomiting in severe cases. Most vertigo presents symptomatically when turning ones head to the left or right, rolling in bed, and lying down.
Why does this happen?
The inner ear is one of four systems our bodies utilize to stabilize our equilibrium and maintain postures. The labyrinth is an organ in the inner ear that has semi-circular canals that are sensitive to positional changes. Simply put, the labyrinth and the structures within allow you to feel what position your head is in even when your eyes are closed. The problems arise when these organs are out of correct alignment.
What can you do?
Physical Therapists are highly trained in treatment of BPPV and in most cases can resolve true BPPV within a few sessions. I encourage most people suffering from these feelings of dizziness to consult a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well as a Medical Doctor. It is possible other factors could be affecting this condition; blood pressure, medication management, and blood flow to the head and neck can all be contributing factors. Please seek treatment for these conditions as they can become more problematic to treat if delayed as well as lead to other injuries if you lose your balance and fall. Do not hesitate to call me for a complimentary vertigo screening!
