Spooner Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists Offers 3-Week ACL Injury Prevention Program; Proper Training Can Reduce ACL Injuries by 90%

Spooner, WI (August 26, 2014) – The human knee is one of the most complex joints in the human body. When an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury occurs, it can take months to recover. Often, recovery is accompanied by large medical costs and in extreme cases, surgery. To promote awareness and help athletes stay in the game, Spooner Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists (SPTRS) is excited to offer an ACL Injury Prevention Program beginning September 16, 2014.

According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, 150,000 ACL injuries occur in the United States per year, costing an average of $500 million in health care. ACL injuries are most commonly caused by sudden stopping, twisting, jumping, or direct contact with the knee in high-intensity sports such as football, volleyball, soccer or basketball. Female athletes tend to see injuries more often as they are 8x more likely to tear an ACL. Yet, 90% of ACL injuries are preventable with proper training.

SPTRS’ ACL Injury Prevention Program will not only offer guidance on how to avoid ACL injuries, but will also act as a sports performance and enhancement program. The boot camp will focus on improving an athlete’s hip, core and knee strength, flexibility, agility and quick direction changes, and jumping and landing techniques. “I’m really excited to start this program and encourage a better awareness for our community athletes. Especially when it comes to younger athletes. It’s never too early to learn correct movements and how to strengthen your body. This can be very beneficial to both performance and health as the athlete ages. Best to get started young!” said Lauren Geier, ATC/L, athletic trainer and leader of the ACL Injury Prevention Program.

Sessions will begin September 16, 2014. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 pm for three weeks. The course, which includes a T-shirt, water bottle and custom DVD provided upon completion, costs $30. All raised funds will be donated to the Spooner High School Athletics Department. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to register. To sign up or request additional information, contact SPTRS at 715-635-2518.
